Vermont House Gives Final Approval On Recreational Marijuana Legalization Bill

After hours of debate, Vermont’s measure to legalize marijuana for recreational use, was passed by a vote of 75 to 71. The bill makes the possession and use of marijuana legal for adults over the age of 21. The bill also allows adults of legal age to grow up to two mature plants at home.

However, this measure is limited and does not create or explain any new regulatory system for legally selling or taxing weed in the state of Vermont.

People in favor of the bill argued that 80,000 Vermont residents regularly consume marijuana in their homes and should not be treated as lawbreakers.

The bill will now move to the Senate for approval. Last month, Vermont senators agreed on a separate bill that establishes a ‘Colorado-style system’ to tax and regulate sales of marijuana.

The two different bills will likely mean that discussions over regulations will continue into 2018. This year’s legislative session is expected to wrap up this week, it is unlikely they will take action on the bill before the end of session on Saturday.
