Maine Becomes The Eighth State To Legalize Marijuana For Recreational Use

Today, the 30th of January 2017, Maine became the eighth state in the United States to legalize marijuana for adults over the age of 21. Of age adults can now possess and consume weed for recreational purposes.

It is the second state on the east coast to do so. The only other legal eastern state is Maine’s neighbor, Massachusetts, who legalized recreational marijuana by barely passing a ballot measure last November. The other six legal states are on the western side of the United States.

Adults in Maine are now allowed to grow up to 18 plants in their home. Adults in Maine will also be allowed to possess up to two and a half ounces of marijuana on their person.

“Responsible adult marijuana consumers will no longer be harassed and treated like criminals,” said David Boyer, who ran the campaign to legalize pot last year. “Police will be able to spend more time addressing serious crimes rather than punishing adults for using a substance that is safer than alcohol.”

Marijuana is still illegal to smoke in public in Maine. Currently, it is also illegal to buy or sell marijuana but the state’s legislators are in the process of creating regulations for legal weed shops to begin selling by February of 2018.
