Jamaica Plans To Install Weed Kiosks At Airports

Jamaican officials are now looking at new ways to earn money from the legal cannabis industry. Plans are underway for the country to cash in on the Caribbean tourists looking to spend money on the popular drug at airports and seaports.

The tourists coming to the country would be able to register to use cannabis at the kiosks after arriving in the country. Once registered, tourists whom do not have a medical marijuana permit from the Ministry of Health can “self-declare”, allowing them to carry up to two ounces while they are in Jamaica.

Officials hope that this will generate more revenue for the government. This will also help promote the already popular pastime that the country is known for. Tourists would now be legally able to smoke marijuana, removing the paranoia around the product. They are hoping the proposal will pass before it is blocked by red tape.

The Cannabis Licensing Authority, or CLA, hopes that this will make it easier for tourists to purchase the substance, in turn, increasing the country’s tourism revenue.

“The thought is that if you are coming out of the airport, there is a kiosk that you can go to,” said CLA chairman Hyacinth Lightbourne “So basically whoever is coming out of immigration can go to that desk and register and get that clearance.”

Possession of weed was decriminalized last year in Jamaica.
