Marijuana Is The #1 Question On Maine’s Fall Ballot

PORTLAND, Maine — Matt Dunlap, Maine’s Secretary of State, announced that the Initiative to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol will appear first on the state ballot this November. In the past, initiatives that appear first on the ballot tend to receive more votes, making the possibility for passage more likely.

The official wording on the ballot reads:

“Do you want to allow the possession and use of marijuana under state law by persons who are at least 21 years of age, and allow the cultivation, manufacture, distribution, testing, and sale of marijuana and marijuana products subject to state regulation, taxation and local ordinance?”

Now being called the Yes on 1 Campaign, supporters are confident that the wording of the initiative is just as important as the placement on the ballot.

According to an April 20 poll released by the Maine People’s Resource Center, nearly 54% of likely voters would approve the initiative if the election were held today. Only about 42% said they would oppose it.

The campaign has been lucky so far. After a court-ordered review of the campaign signatures that were previously invalidated, it was determined by the court, that they had in fact the correct amount of petition signatures needed. The state says that they randomly ordered this fall’s ballot questions.
