Denver Lawmakers Approve Limits On Medical and Recreational Weed Shops

Denver, Colorado – Legislation was approved by the Denver City Council recently that will put limits on the number of retail and cultivation sites in the city of Denver.

This legislation makes the existing number of marijuana business locations a permanent 421, while lowering the number of cultivation licenses over time.

Denver’s mayor, Michael Hancock, said he will sign the measure that has just been finalized after many weeks of debate.

Much of the debate centered around existing business applications that were waiting approval. Many council members tried to reject the almost 45 new business locations within the city but in the end they were allowed to proceed.

New legislation requires any new recreational cultivation site to be further than 1,000 feet from any schools or residential areas. To obtain a new licenses, existing licences will need to be revoked or surrendered and an annual lottery will be held for new ones.

Future licenses will need to submit “good neighbor” plans to reduce the impact of growing operations in neighborhoods.
