Is The DEA Going To Reschedule Marijuana?

Marijuana Reclassification

The debate on whether or not marijuana should be reclassified under federal law from a Schedule I to a Schedule II drug continues. The Drug Enforcement Administration plans to make a decision in “the first half of 2016” as stated in a letter to United States senators.

Out of the five schedules the United States has for classifying illegal drugs, Schedule I is reserved for the most dangerous chemicals, or drugs, with the highest potential for abuse. The Schedule I drugs are what the DEA considers to have no current accepted medical use.

Marijuana has been considered a Schedule I drug for decades and this is not the first time it has been up for reconsideration. It is important to state that rescheduling marijuana will not make it legal, but it will ease restrictions on research.

“DEA understands the widespread interest in the prompt resolution to these petitions and hopes to release its determination in the first half of 2016,” DEA said in the letter.

The statement comes as a response to letters from eight United States senators who support the reconsideration. Supporters are hoping that the federal government will help facilitate research into the benefits of medical marijuana. The FDA has also forwarded their review of the evidence surrounding the safety and effectiveness of medical marijuana.
