Vermont Senate Passes Historical Marijuana Legislation Bill

Vermont might soon make history by being the first state in the country to legalize marijuana through legislature. Vermont would join the other four states who have legalized marijuana. Colorado, Washington, Oregon and Alaska have all legalized pot but did so through general election votes, not through legislature.

Yesterday, Thursday February 26th, the Vermont Senate passed a new marijuana legalization bill. The bill will continue on to the State House where it will need to be approved before moving on to the governor’s desk, Gov. Peter Shumlin, whom is known to support the bill.

If the bill is passed, recreational marijuana sales would be legal in the state of Vermont starting in 2018. Making it the first state in the north east to do so. Home grown marijuana and edible marijuana products would still remain illegal.

Vermont has already passed decriminalization of the substance since 2013 so the bill does not remove criminal penalties for possession that may result in jail time. However, the bill would remove the fine currently in place for marijuana possession.

This is going to be a major issue in the state of Vermont during this election year. Initial statistics show a lead in favor of legalization. Presidential Primary polling done by the Vermont Public Radio show votes came back around 55% in favor on the issue with only 32% against recreational marijuana.
