Vermont Senate Committee Approves Proposal to Regulate Marijuana for Adult Use

MONTPELIER, Vermont – Proposed Bill 4 – 1 was just approved last week that could potentially end marijuana prohibition in the sate of Vermont and allows the regulation of marijuana for adult use.

S. 241 makes marijuana legal for adults aged 21 or older to posses up to one ounce of the substance. It also establishes a tightly controlled system of licensed marijuana testing facilities, cultivation sites, and retail stores.

If approved, the bill would not take effect until January 2018 and it would still be illegal to consume marijuana in public or drive under the influence of the substance. It would also create a study commission to examine issues such as edible marijuana products and home cultivation, which would not be allowed under the bill.

The bill has received positive bipartisan support in the Senate Committee and a strong majority of Vermonters (56%) support regulating the cultivation and sale of marijuana for adult use, according to a statewide survey conducted by the Castleton Polling Institute in September.

Gov. Peter Shumlin and Senate Judiciary Chairman Dick Sears have also shown support for a bill that “cautiously and deliberately” ends marijuana prohibition in Vermont.
