Puerto Rico Legalizes Marijuana For Medical Use

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico – Governor of Puerto Rico, Alejandro Garcia Padilla, signed an executive order recently authorizing the use of medical marijuana. This signature was unexpected and comes after last year’s executive order to legalize medical cannabis.

Puerto Rico is still a U.S. island territory and like other U.S. states, will require a seed-to-sale inventory tracking system as well as independant lab testing environments to ensure purity and THC / CBD content.

The island has legalized the use of pills, creams, patches and oral drops for medical use only while smoking and growing the substance for personal use remains illegal. Puerto Rico’s health secretary has three months to issue a report on how the executive order will be implemented.

The secretary of health has not yet said what ailments will qualify patients for Medical Marijuana. How it will be grown, tested and distributed are also still yet to be announced. Supporters are positive this is a “step in the right direction” for the legalization of Medical Marijuana in the United States.
