Eight New Medical Marijuana Dispensaries Opened Their Doors In New York Today

The first eight of twenty medical marijuana dispensaries have opened in the state of New York today. Lawmakers passed the Compassionate Care Act in 2014 but it took the state officials over a year to finalize the rules and select the first dispensaries to open. The first five approved companies are allowed four dispensaries each. With more dispensaries expected to open soon. These dispensaries will not be allowed to sell smoke-able marijuana or edibles.

The Compassionate Care Act was signed into law in July 2014, and it allows patients with debilitating or life threatening conditions to obtain medical marijuana. The Department of Health includes patients with these conditions as eligible: cancer, HIV infection or AIDS, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, spinal cord injury with spasticity, epilepsy, inflammatory bowel disease, neuropathy, and Huntington’s disease.

Patients suffering from these conditions are required to apply for a registry identification card after receiving a prescription from a registered physician. After approval, the registry identification card will be sent in the mail.

Twenty-three states now have comprehensive medical marijuana programs. New York’s is considered one of the most tightly regulated.
