New Recreational Marijuana Bill Introduced In New York

With Medical Marijuana now legalized in New York, advocates are beginning to push for decriminalizing of the drug entirely. This was the topic of discussion at a public hearing at Buffalo City Hall recently find here. Advocates say the cost of criminalization of the drug is too great compared to the benefits.

Meanwhile, Senator Liz Kreuger and Assemblywoman Crystal Peoples-Stokes have introduced the Marijuana Regulation and Taxation Act. This act would legalize marijuana for people over the age of 21.

“We have lost the war and in the process of losing the war, we have literally lost communities,” Stokes said. “Families have been destroyed. Children have been without parents and we have spent a lot of money, not just in the criminal justice system, but in the social network for those families after they lost their members to incarceration.”

The legislation’s goal is to tax and regulate the drug, mirroring laws like the ones Colorado and Oregon have in place. According to the legislation, there would be retailers and individuals could purchase two ounces or grow up to six plants for personal consumption. Smoking marijuana in public and resale of the substance would still remain illegal.

If you live in New York, please take a moment to contact your New York legislators about this important Bill. Let them know that you support it.
