North Carolina Law Makers Approve Changes To Medical Marijuana Law
Last year, a bill in North Carolina was enacted that allowed the medical use of marijuana to treat seizures associated with epilepsy called the Hope 4 Haley and Friends Act. The North Carolina Epilepsy Alternative Treatment Act was approved recently that allows the following editions to the Hope 4 Haley and Friends Act.
Currently, the Hope 4 Haley and Friends Act allows limited use of medical marijuana (MMJ) extracts containing high levels of cannabidiol (CBD) and only vary small amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
The new bill proposes changes to the limited CBD requirements. Lowering the minimum CBD content to 5% by weight, and raises the maximum allowed THC content to .9% by weight.
Also included in the bill are enhanced privacy protections and confidentiality for patients and caregivers enrolled in the program.
Under the state’s limited medical marijuana law, only patients suffering from intractable epilepsy are eligible to use medical marijuana extracts, and that does not change with this year’s legislation.
The new bill also includes a sunset clause ending the program in 2021, when use of CBD oil would again become illegal in North Carolina if studies fail to show therapeutic benefit.
