Medical Marijuana Dispensary System In Hawaii Becomes Official
The bill to establish Hawaii’s medical marijuana system became legal recently. Hawaii’s state Department of Health has until January 4th to finalize the rules and regulations for the new system. The governor has called this deadline aggressive.
Only eight applicants will be given licences based on a merit system process begining in January. Each license holder will be allowed up to two dispensaries.
There are an estimated 13,800 registered medical marijuana cardholders living in Hawaii. With the new law, qualified patients will be allowed to purchase up to eight ounces per month.
“The department’s major regulatory goals are patient safety, public safety through tight inventory controls and accountability, and quality control, all of which can require a high cost of doing business,” she said. “The statute will require the licensee to be financially viable; we will verify that. And to remain financially viable, the licensee will have to cover the cost of goods sold as well as the overall costs of doing business, plus make a sufficient profit to incentivize the licensee to remain in business and to make business improvements.”
